Nathaniel (Nat) Hentz, PhD
President
Nat bridges four key elements of company growth: investment, strategy, training, and technical guidance.
He was introduced to investment due diligence while leading the New Technologies group at Eli Lilly – RTP Laboratories. He contributed to multiple new technology investments ranging in value from $100K-$25MM. He continued this journey as Vice President, Technology & Strategy at Artel, Inc., the global leader in liquid handling verification and workflow optimization. He helped Artel prepare for due diligence by perspective buyers and, in 2022, Artel was successfully acquired.
Nat’s vision for strategic growth became clearer during his 11 years as Assistant Director of the Analytical Lab at North Carolina State University – Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC). In that role, he built the Analytical lab from the ground up and laid the foundation for growth. During this time, he also started the contract analytical services program to serve university research programs, biotech start-ups, and biopharmaceutical manufacturers, which he led to 30% growth per year. He took his strategic vision to Artel in 2018 and helped the company nearly double its revenue within his four years of tenure.
He gained extensive technical knowledge in drug discovery at Eli Lilly & Co. and Bristol Myers Squibb while developing high throughput screens, supporting automation, and evaluating new detection technologies. Nat continued to deepen his analytical expertise in biomanufacturing at NC State BTEC, where he developed, validated, and executed numerous analytical methods in support of the upstream and downstream bioprocesses. He has helped several life science tools companies since 2004 by leveraging his technical expertise and customer perspective.
With over 15 years of training experience, Dr. Hentz has developed and taught university courses, industry and government (FDA and BARDA) short courses, and conference (Society for Lab Automation and Screening) courses. He is currently an instructor for the bioprocessing training sponsored by the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Build Back Better program / Accelerate NC coalition to increase workforce diversification.
He earned a BS in Chemistry from Eastern Michigan University and a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from University of Kentucky.
